The Ottoman Empire was one of the most highly established and most powerful states of the world during the 15th & 16th centuries. This huge Ottoman Empire that covered parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, was created by the Turkish tribes.

Who Founded The Ottoman Empire?

The foundation of this Islamic-run superpower was laid down by “Osman l”. This was after the Mongols had defeated the Seljuks at the end of the 13th century.

The term Ottoman is derived from the Arabic name of Osman. Hence, the empire got this miraculous name, The Ottoman Empire!

Osman I was the nomadic Turkemanian Chief (Bey) who was not only the founder of the dynasty but, also the whole empire around the 14th century (1300). He was a brave warrior (gazi) and the whole empire’s name is the dynastic appellation of his name.

How Long did the Ottoman Empire Span?

Though the peak period lasts only till the 16th century, The Ottoman Empire spanned for more than 600 years. In 1922, various regions of South Eastern Europe and the Middle East attained their independent state levels, and the Turkish Republic came into being.

Turkish tribes of Anatolia (Asia minor) not only created this state but spent their whole lives in protecting and expanding this huge Empire.

Which Regions Were Part Of The Ottoman Empire?

As discussed earlier, The Ottoman Empire had a powerful impact on three continents of the world, let’s see what it encompassed..

The Ottoman Empire covered major areas of Europe, including present-day Hungary, Greece, Vienna, the Balkan region, and Ukraine. It also occupied some major parts of the Middle East including Palestine, Iraq, Syria, and Egypt.

Various regions of North Africa also came under the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Some other major historical areas include the Arabian Peninsula, Algeria, and several other areas.

Origins & Expansion Of The Ottoman State

Initially, the Muslim warriors pursued on expanding their reign and fought against the Byzantine Christians. Until 1481, The Ottoman Empire became leaders of the world and strived not only for the expansion of their territories but, also fought for the spread of Islam.

Who Was Ertugrul & What Was His Role in the Foundation of The Ottoman Empire?

The ancestors of Osman l had laid a strong foundation for the state and paved the way for it's resurrection starting with Suleyman Shah, grandather of Osman I and father of Ertugrul Gazi. Another was the father of the Osman l himself, Ertugrul Gazi. With only a small number of the Kayi tribe, Ertugrul Gazi chose the challenging journey towards the West and fought as Gazi. He was truly a brave warrior with great intellect and an influential personality in history.

Under his father's wing, Osman l  carried on his ancestors legacy and brought to life The Ottoman Empire.
